IV. Tracking Legal Literature
  • Legal Books

As to free web services, a first starting point for the search of legal books might be national libraries such as the Library of Congress Washington, D.C., US, or Gabriel, the gateway to Europe's national libraries. Furthermore, Karlsruhe Virtual Catalog (KVK) is a recommendable meta search interface. A good entry point for research in Germany is Bibliotheken, Bücher und Berichte (BBB) containing an extensive index of German library catalogues and further institutions.
Next to searching the national libraries, a second approach is to consult the databases of leading online bookstores such as amazon.com/.de, Barnes & Noble or bol.de.
A third possibility is to check the web sites of (legal) publishers. For this purpose Publishers' Catalogues is an excellent starting point featuring an exhaustive geographic index of publishers in general.

  • Legal Articles

For retrieving legal articles, useful sites certainly are the Westlaw and Lexis-Nexis databases, both of wich provide all kinds of legal information, i.a. full text articles. They require a fee-based log-in, though.
Further informative free sites are UnCoverWeb Denver, CO, US (as to articles from US libraries), Jason/Jade University of Bielefeld, DE, or Subito Berlin, DE (both as to articles from German libraries), all of which are fee-based article delivery sevices offering free searches within their respective databases.
